TMJ Speciailist
Technically speaking, there is no formal recognized specialty for TMJ. This is because different types of TMJ treatment can be performed by many different dentists. For instance: if your jaw hurts because your teeth are not aligned properly, an orthodontist can start your treatment. If your bite is off, a general dentist or a prosthodontist can correct your bite. If you jaw is naturally misaligned, an oral surgeon can do surgery to break the jaw and re-align it. So any dentist that treats TMJ can be a TMJ dentist, but technically is not a TMJ “Specialist.”
