TMJ Syndrome

This encompasses all of the symptoms that may come with any type of jaw problem. The more common TMJ symptoms are: clicking of the jaw joint (tmj), crepitus-a grating of the jaw joint, pain in the tmj, pain in the muscles of mastication and the head and neck muscles, the back of the head, and the upper shoulders. The muscles of mastication are those that open and close the mouth, and move the jaws backward, forward, and sideways. The muscles that turn the head are also involved.

Locked jaws are also part of the syndrome. If it becomes difficult or impossible to open the mouth due to sore jaw muscles, this is part of the syndrome. This is also referred to as “muscle splinting.” This happens when the muscles are so sore, they cramp up.

Internal derangement of the TMJ means that is there is damage to the tissues that are in the TMJ itself. This could be a torn or punctured articular disc, a displaced disc, or an arthritic disc or joint.

Malocclusion (crooked bite) that causes abnormal jaw displacement is a major cause of TMJ Syndrome.

Whole books are devoted to the TMJ syndrome. This is only a summary.
