GUM ABSCESS
When a gum pocket is inflamed, it can progress to an infection called a GUM ABSCESS. In this situation, pus exudes somewhere out of the area around the tooth, or it can form a fistula. This is a swelling that is like a pimple on the area near the infection. When is pops on its own, there is no pain. However, the bone around the abscess will continue to degenerate, and the support for the tooth will decrease. This leads to mobility and loss of the tooth. The tooth can be perfectly intact, but if the bony support is lost, the tooth will be extracted.
DENTAL ABSCESS
When a cavity goes untreated, it can go to the nerve inside the tooth. This causes an infection called an abscess. This infection can go to the entire length of the tooth and lead to an infection in the bone around the tip of the tooth. In both instances, a root canal and a crown will remedy the situation if enough of the tooth remains to support a crown.
