TMJ treatment means procedures that are done to alleviate pain in the jaw joints and/or muscle pain associated with the jaw muscles.
TMJ treatment can include orthotics (splints), or any other devices used to separate the jaws in an effort to seek relief of pain in the jaw joints and/or the jaw muscles. In severe cases, muscle relaxers can be initially be prescribed.
TMJ treatment can also include bite correction, full mouth reconstruction, orthodontics, jaw surgery, joint surgery, physical therapy, chiropractics, jaw exercises, cranial manipulation, and when all else fails, high potency pain medication. The critical factor is the ability to diagnose the cause of the problem and choose the correct treatment modality. There are many books and articles on TMD treatment. It is a challenging area of dentistry to understand and to treat. Surgery and high potency pain medication should be the last choice.
